Look, there's shit happening on an international scale right now that is real bad for us. Real bad. The fact that China, Iran, and Russia are teaming up for joint military exercises in the Middle East, to signal "protection" for Iran is not only not good, it is disastrous.

The fact that Turkey and Russia are working together, and Turkey now has a blank check to go into Syria and bomb the shit out of them anywhere they want is very bad shit.

The fact that the Saudis had a terrorist who shot up a U.S. Naval base is terrible. Nothing happened. The fact that North Korea has resumed testing missiles, Russia is bragging about it's new missiles, and Iran is back in business manufacturing fissile nuclear materials is catastrophic.

I don't know what part of "danger to national security" McConnell doesn't understand, but right now he holds the key to our survival. Literally. So he better get up off his ass and find 20 GOP Senators and remove that motherfucker and put his ass in prison ASAP. It ought to be obvious to anyone with a working brain that Putin has weaponized the internet, and has two or three "factories" where trained FSB intel agents are committing cyber crimes daily.

Putin is an agent of chaos. he is fomenting it all over the world. Look at what's happening in India right now? He has exploited weaknesses and divisions in every single country he can reach. Don't worry. As soon as he can get Trump to pull out of Afghanistan, he will go back in there to get his hands on the oil and gas resources he craves. Meanwhile he has us hating one another. Homophobia, Islamophobia, Anti Semitism, Racism, etc. Extreme Nationalism, anti immigration, etc.Manufactured by Putin and available all over Europe,, the MIddle East and the good old USA. Putin is courting the South Americans too. Oil and gas, people. Oligarchs need it more than oxygen.

Everything Trump and McConnell have done is disastrous for the US, and we will be paying for it for decades. Trump and McConnell have handed the keys to the kingdom to Putin because Putin helped them both (and so many other republicans) get elected, and nothing but power and influence matter to them. Republicans don't care about the future of the USA, believing that the future will fix itself when their wrecking ball is finally broken; what neither realize is that we are flushing the American way of life — the American Dream — down the toilet for momentary gain, both financial and through a reshaping of the American judicial system... which one could argue for Republicans, are the same thing.

After another Christmas season of arguing with relatives who think that Trump is doing a wonderful job despite all of the indicators, despite all of the evidence, and despite facts laid bare by Trump's own incompetence, I'm left wondering how these people, including Trump, manage to say they want to "make America great again" when the truth is that America's greatness only happened when Republicans were so defeated and pushed from power that they couldn't get elected County Commissioner, let alone Senator or Congressman. They pine for the 1950s through the early 70s like it was some Eutopia, ignoring the fact that the reason the US had the money to build the interstate highway system, educate everyone, and send a man to the moon was because we had a 92% marginal tax rate and a strong Federal government that took it all seriously. To listen to today's Republicans, you wouldn't know that we had decades of double-digit economic growth while the wealthiest few families and largest corporations paid their fair share.

Say what you will about Joe Biden (and I know you all will); he was 100% correct this week when he said that America can recover from Trump's four years of presidency, but if he's re-elected, it will fundamentally alter the American system of everything — justice, accountability, the rule of law, political alliances that have kept us safe since WWII, and our standing as the leader of the planet. And on top of everything else, we're faced with an existential crisis that if we don't do something to mitigate and slow, and do it [italic]now[/italic] , will kill displace and kill millions of Americans.

The only question left is how the Republicans will manage to blame it all on Democrats.

From r24....

Conway has been relentless in his criticism of his wife's employer. In another Thursday tweet, he humorously urged the Senate to remove Trump from office ahead of the upcoming impeachment trial. Sharing a tweet about Trump's cameo in the 1992 film Home Alone 2 being cut in a Canadian broadcast, Conway pointed out how easy it had been to remove Trump. "You see, Senators? It's not that hard," he wrote.

by Anonymousreply 27December 28, 2019 2:43 PM

The Hill:

Senate Republicans are plotting a speedy acquittal of President Trump as they strategize ahead of the impeachment trial.

After weeks of public haggling from within the caucus, GOP senators are largely lining up behind a shorter proceeding with few, if any, witnesses, paving the way for them to hand Trump an early election-year victory.

by Anonymousreply 28December 28, 2019 2:45 PM

Do these fools not realize that acquitting him and allowing him to continue criming in plain sight will enrage the left?

Or do they think their voter suppression tactics will keep them safe from the backlash?

It didn't work in the midterms after they crowed and crowed about gutting the ACA. I doubt it will work now.

But these people think Putin is going to have their backs and they aren't prepared for another massive voter turnout or for the orange traitor to become more brazen in his criming.

I have news for Moscow bitch - people aren't going to blame the Democrats for letting treason go unpunished. Turtle will rightly get the blame and suffer the backlash.

I can't understand why these idiots are terrified of 30% of the country and not the other 70%.

by Anonymousreply 29December 28, 2019 2:52 PM

I do not understand one thing. The Senate is not the judge, it’s the jury. What in the hell kind of say do they have on what witnesses are called? Someone please explain this to me. Are these planted stories meant to intimidate the House? Since they’re the ones who are prosecuting?

But I do think the Repugs are playing a losing game – even if Trump wins in 2020 (which is still a possibility) they are alienating an entire generation of future voters.

by Anonymousreply 32December 28, 2019 3:10 PM

R30, an impeachment trial is a unique process, and has to follow certain principles set out in the Constitution. The Senate has the ability to rule on what evidence will be heard.

by Anonymousreply 41December 28, 2019 4:53 PM

Actually the Senate is the jury. The President has to mount a defense, including calling witnesses. This time the lines are blurred and McConnell coordinating with the WH is completely "unusual" to say the least. Yes it's political, and yes the Senate has detailed rules about how they intend to conduct the trial, but a lot of that is not in the Constitution, but has evolved. Mitch has made it far more political than it already was.

The Senate can decide how many witnesses and how long a trial is needed to review and evaluate each article of impeachment The House prosecutes and can call prosecution witnesses. . And really, as the defendant, the person being charged, in this case POTUS, has a right to call witnesses. Trump wants a circus where he thinks he can flip the scenario and put Biden on trial. He can't and if Roberts wasn't such a weak pussy, he'd overrule the request if and when it comes up at the trial.

As many as a million ethnic Uighurs, Kazakhs and others have been sent to internment camps and prisons in Xinjiang over the past three years, an indiscriminate clampdown aimed at weakening the population’s devotion to Islam. Even as these mass detentions have provoked global outrage, though, the Chinese government is pressing ahead with a parallel effort targeting the region’s children.

Nearly a half million children have been separated from their families and placed in boarding schools so far, according to a planning document published on a government website, and the ruling Communist Party has set a goal of operating one to two such schools in each of Xinjiang’s 800-plus townships by the end of next year.

everyone should find a way to call Trump a liar. We know he is, but I'm not sure Senators and Representatives have really absorbed that, and found a way to use it. Every time one of them goes on a talk show and the host talks about what Trump said, they should point out that Trump lies constantly and nothing he says can ever be trusted. Make it real, people.

by Anonymousreply 55December 28, 2019 10:12 PM

and get aggressive about this. Every time somebody quotes the president, ask why they believe that is remotely true. Ask why anyone should believe anything Trump says, ever. ask about all the other times he's lied. Ask constantly, why are you taking this man seriously? What has he ever done to make you think he is telling the truth about this or anything else?

by Anonymousreply 56December 28, 2019 10:15 PM

when they talk about Trump's policies, ask why anyone imagines he has policies? Ask why anyone thinks that he has anything worth saying about any aspect of government? Ask what people are thinking imagining that he cares about anything other than his own money. Ask what he has done in his life, including his presidency, that makes anyone think that he has any real interest in anything other than getting more money for himself and occasionally his family.

R61, this is why we absolutely MUST elect Democratic majorities in all state legislatures. This is the big year. This is the year that the census happens and then after the census results come in, state legislatures re-draw the Congressional District lines. This is often overseen by the state courts and the Secretary of State's office. The State Attorney General might even have a role.Bottom line, we have to elect Democrats all up and down the ticket.

by Anonymousreply 67December 29, 2019 3:08 AM

I think the house holding on the articles will prove the most important part in history. It will be the climax in the movie version because if she had handed them over, the Senate would have immediately acquitted him and then everyone would have moved on after the holidays.

Twitter is too scared of the repercussions if they attempted to limit IMPOTUS in any way. He and all the reich-wing would have a meltdown and be screaming 24/7 about an infringement on his free speech rights (even though the First Amendment applies to governmental action). Twitter — under immense pressure — would then reverse course and Cheatolini and his Deplorables would be crowing incessantly about owning the libtards.

“I wouldn’t trust Rudy to represent me in a parking dispute so I’d say avoid,” a senior GOP Senate aide said tersely when asked if it was a good idea for Republican senators to meet with Giuliani to get a Ukraine briefing. Another top aide in a different Republican office said their senator had informed staff that they had “no interest at all” in meeting with Giuliani on this, fearing it would amount to a “waste of time,” if not something worse.

ABC: 'No exoneration' if impeachment trial 'rigged' by McConnell, senator says

*

"Is Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, going to try to rig this trial, working in lockstep with the president and his lawyers? Or is he going to allow a fair trial?" Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. "We keep hearing President Trump say he's going to be exonerated. Look, if you have a rigged trial there's no exoneration in acquittal."

ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl asked Van Hollen if Democrats would be able to convince Republican senators to vote with them, but Van Hollen said it was too early to see how Murkowski and others would vote.

"They're going to have to answer for the fact that they don't want to see anymore evidence, right?" he said. "Those who vote against witnesses and vote against documents are essentially telling the American people they don't want to see anything. They don't want to hear anything. And in doing so, you're complicit in a cover-up."

CBS: GOP senator says Trump isn't a role model for young people

*

"I don't think that President Trump as a person is a role model for a lot of different youth. That's just me personally," Lankford said on "Face the Nation." "I don't like the way that he tweets, some of the things that he says, his word choices at times are not my word choices. He comes across with more New York City swagger than I do from the Midwest and definitely not the way that I'm raising my kids."

Lankford is a member of a weekly prayer breakfast held in the Senate, where members of the upper chamber come together to pray, sing hymns and swap stories. The Oklahoma Republican has a masters degree in divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and served as the director of student ministry for the Baptist Convention of Oklahoma and director of a Baptist youth camp before he was elected to Congress.

Lankford said he wishes Mr. Trump were more of a role model, but acknowledged he and the president are in lockstep on areas Lankford is "very passionate about," such as abortion and religious liberty.

"For people of faith, it's a bit of a conundrum at times that I look at some of the moral decisions that he's made and go, I disagree with that," the Oklahoma Republican said. "But he's also been very, very protective of areas like life and very protective of areas of religious liberty to be able to allow people to be able to live their faith out. And at the end of the day, what we're really looking for in an administration is folks that allow us to be able to live our principles."

I don't want Trump to die though. I want him to be in jail and have lost whatever money he has left. I want him to die after he's shamed, shunned and punished. If he dies now he'd be a hero to the deplorables. I hope he lives another 10 years

I feel horrible about Lewis. Such an amazing man. Can't believe after the equally wonderful Elijah Cummings we might lose another great man.

by Anonymousreply 125December 30, 2019 2:18 AM

John Lewis is a great man and rightfully a hero to many. He’s also a nice guy, extremely humble, and very unassuming. I would see him often over the years at the old Weschlers auction house location in downtown DC across from the FBI building (before they moved a few years ago). He’d come in to bid or pick up something he had won. We chatted occasionally. Thoroughly wonderful and decent guy.

As recently as a few years ago a diagnosis of Stage IV pancreatic cancer would be a certain death sentence. I hope that some of the new cancer treatments that have been developed can change that outcome for him.

by Anonymousreply 128December 30, 2019 3:33 AM

I wonder if Trump has copyrighted that scowl?

How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways:

The ever-present scowl

The bouncy OK

The accordion hand motions while speaking

Applauding himself when he enters a hall

The crossed arms that make him look like an obstinate child

The way he points at reporters to indicate that they have the next question

The utterly childish handshake where he yanks the other person to throw them off balance

He has an odd way of turning his head when listening to someone else. It just looks weird.

The obsequious body language when he’s with Putin

The way he puts his arm out so as to direct other people in a certain direction, even when he’s a guest in their country

The fake tan and comb-over

I’m sure there’s more. That’s just off the top of my head.

Washington Post: Trump’s lawyer and the Venezuelan president: How Giuliani got involved in back-channel talks with Maduro

*

The phone conversation involving the Venezuelan president and Trump’s personal lawyer, which has not been previously reported, provides another example of how Giuliani used his private role to insert himself into foreign diplomacy, alarming administration officials confused about whose interests he was representing.

Giuliani operated a similar campaign this year in Ukraine, where he pressured officials to announce investigations to benefit Trump — an endeavor that led to the president’s impeachment this month.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 133December 30, 2019 1:06 PM

Well with recent news breaking about the inner turmoil and contentiousness at the White House, and the fact that the funds were frozen within hours of the shake down phone call, Doug Jones's excuses for not supporting a vote to remove are getting very thing.

Although I like to think he is taking a page out of Pelosi's playbook. He wants to pose as completely reluctant. Not rushing to judgement one way or the other. And then he will vote with the Dems. He is a more thoughtful person than Manchin, who has already decided he will support Trump.

I just want to see 7-8 Republicans stand up, even though we know Manchin as the one renegade Dem. Truth is, our betrayal of the Kurds will persuade Republicans more than the actual articles of Impeachment. And the reactions to Trump's pardon of the Navy Seal murderer is another.

Mr. Trump’s demands (to halt military assistance to an ally) sent shock waves through the White House and the Pentagon, created deep rifts within the senior ranks of his administration, left key aides like Mr. Mulvaney under intensifying scrutiny — and ended only after Mr. Trump learned of a damning whistle-blower report and came under pressure from influential Republican lawmakers.

Newsweek followed up this morning:

White House officials struggled to set up meetings with President Donald Trump regarding frozen military aid to Ukraine because the president was golfing, according to a new report charting the events at the center of Trump’s Ukraine strategy and subsequent impeachment.

Stefanik, who emerged during House impeachment hearings as one of President Donald Trump’s staunchest defenders, posted a list of recommended books for her constituents, as part of what she described as her “passionate” belief in reading and literacy.

Things got dicey for the congresswoman, however, when she asked her Twitter followers if they have any reading recommendations — and the most popular answer appears to be that she read the United States Constitution.
Trump's support in MT is surprisingly weak: 53 percent

Agreed. There's a limit to Trump's appeal in Montana. And although Montana is a red state, it's a red state with a lot of Democrats compared to those such as Nebraska, Idaho, Wyoming, etc.

Eg. Montana has now had a couple of Democratic Governors in a row, plus Sen. Tester was re-elected by a wider margin in 2018, despite Trump making 4 trips to MT to stop him.

by Anonymousreply 170December 31, 2019 7:45 AM

I believe Trump is vulnerable in places like Montana, Wyoming and Utah because a lot of the people who live there are very environmentally conscious. The Environment is a huge deal for them as it is for Colorado, and Oregon and Washington. Nebraska too. Yes, I know I'm naming some red states, but if we had no electoral college, those people would matter.

by Anonymousreply 171December 31, 2019 12:08 PM

We can get rid of the electoral college if we have 37 states legislatures who'd vote to change the Constitution. At one point the Republicans controlled more than 30 state legislatures and governors' offices. That's where the real battle needs to take place.

We need to look at those seats in every state, and start flipping them so we can end gerrymandering, voter suppression, mass incarceration, privatization of prisons, support public education, raising the minimum wage, clean our environment, and make sure our elections are free and fair.

The State Legislatures are where all that shit happens.

From Rawstory (Muriel won’t let me post the link):

Nancy Pelosi could drive President Donald Trump off the deep end by refusing to transmit the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump for another 36 days, former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum explained on Monday. Frum was interviewed by MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on “The Last Word” about the standoff between Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on whether there will be a fair Senate trial of Trump.

“If there’s been a trial and there’s been a sham here and the Senate has slapped together an acquittal, imagine the tone of President Trump on the 4th of February — triumphal, obnoxious, overbearing, ‘I win, I win, you lose, you lose.’ If the impeachment is still pending on the 4th of February, can you imagine how insane that State of the Union is going to be?” he asked.

“It’s going to be an hour of paranoia and grievance and narcissism that ... will terrify many of its supporters. So if it’s not wrapped up by the 4th of February, that could have consequences.”

by Anonymousreply 175December 31, 2019 12:58 PM

Sigh. No, it shouldn’t. Had you read the article, R182, you would have seen that the judge took this action because the House withdrew its subpoena, and lawyers for the House and DOJ agreed that the issue originally presented no longer existed. Thus, there was no “case or controversy” for the judge to decide, and courts don’t hand down advisory opinions. The judge was simply following the law — and both sides agreed.
In his finding, the judge [bold] agreed with the House of Representatives [bold] and attorneys from the Department of Justice, representing Trump in this matter, that Kupperman no longer faces the "irreconcilable commands of two coordinate branches of government" since the House Intelligence committee withdrew it's subpoena in November.

There was a crazy rumor that Pence was plotting with Priebus and Ryan to support Trump's impeachment, but that plot fell apart. Since Pence isn't going to do the dirty work, it's time for the Republican donor class to step up and finish the job. They all know what a disaster Trump is - and Trump is likely to have the meltdown of all meltdowns at the SOTU speech - so the clock is ticking.

Speaking of which, the SOTU day would be a good day for Biden's "The World Is Laughing At Trump" commercial to make it's debut on national television - preferably Fox.

The Hill: Senate Republican predicts impeachment trial ends by State of the Union

*

Sen. Roy Blunt (Mo.), a member of GOP leadership, said on Tuesday that he expects President Trump's impeachment trial will be over by a State of the Union speech scheduled for early February. Blunt, the No. 4 Senate Republican, told KSSZ, a Missouri radio station, that the expected that the Senate trial would be "pretty predictable" and happen "quickly."

"My guess is we'll be done with this by the time the president comes," Blunt said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has formally invited Trump to deliver the State of the Union on Feb. 4, a day after the Iowa caucus.

"I think we should have had enough time for both the House to fairly present its view of why the president should be impeached and for the president ... to have a chance for his lawyers to explain why he shouldn't be, and then we'll have that vote and move on," Blunt added on Tuesday.

The Hill: Lewandowski decides against Senate bid

President Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski announced Tuesday he will not run for Senate in New Hampshire after flirting with a bid for most of 2019.

In a series of tweets, Lewandowski said he's "certain" he would have won the GOP primary and defeated Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), but that he'll instead focus on his family and reelecting Trump.

"NH needs a US Senator who will put our citizens first and not illegal aliens; one who will support pro-growth policies to keep the Trump economy strong; one who will support strict constitutionalist judges; and one who will fight for our values, not those of Washington, DC," Lewandowski said. "Accordingly, I will be making an endorsement in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate in the near future to ensure we defeat Jeanne Shaheen in 2020."

Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas has asked a federal judge for permission to share newly available evidence in his case with congressional impeachment investigators.

Parnas and others have been charged with a conspiracy to funnel foreign money into American campaigns, but Parnas’ connection to Giuliani might mean that the information investigators recovered from him is relevant to the case against the President.

In a letter on Monday, Parnas’ lawyer Joseph Bondy said the government had finished processing “the complete extraction” of the iPhone Parnas was carrying when he and business partner Igor Fruman were arrested in October. The government was also prepared to produce documents seized from Parnas’ home, Bondy said.

“Review of these materials is essential to the Committee’s ability to corroborate the strength of Mr. Parnas’ potential testimony,” Bondy wrote.

Parnas helped Giuliani dig for dirt on Democrats in Ukraine, and with Giuliani’s effort to smear the American ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, whose ouster played a large role in the impeachment hearings.

In court earlier this month, prosecutors said they did not expect to object to Parnas’ request to share the evidence with House impeachment investigators. Judge Paul Oetken also said he would likely grant such a request.

I've done some digging on his standing in states he won last time.

Independent voters in MI and PA are decidedly against impeachment, but his favorable rating in both states is disastrous (-14 and -7, respectively). His job approval rating in MI is 43 percent, in PA it is 46 percent.

WI is even more optimistic. 54 percent of Independents support impeachment. His favorable rating is -14 and his job approval rating is 46 percent.

Iowa is interesting, though considered a solid red state, 47 percent of Independents support impeachment, his favorable rating is -14, and his job approval rating is 47 percent.

The majority of voters in all four states think the country is moving in the wrong direction.

That was my first thought when I heard the news. Now that it's been so quickly resolved, I'm certain of it. Remember, Trump likes to start trouble where there is none and then swoop in to "solve" it.

by Anonymousreply 252January 2, 2020 2:51 PM

It's Iran. That means Putin ended it. It wasn't staged for Trump it was Iran insisting they had to respond to the US bombing Hezbollah targets. So now Iran is placated because they feel they've embarrassed Trump in Iraq, and Trump is happy because Vlad once again proved his friendship. It was a Russian operation through and through.

by Anonymousreply 253January 2, 2020 2:55 PM

Want to add, think about the time when the US/Trump was under pressure to "do something" when Assad used chemical weapons in Syria back in '17 or '18? So we had air strikes on a base, but allowed Russia time to move their planes, and we coordinated the strikes with them, so it was pure theatre. No permanent damage, Trump looked good, (so he thought) and the media swallowed it...although they did report how useless it was.

It is quite clear from the documents released thus far in December that Mango Cheatolini orchestrated the hold on the security funds designated for Ukraine. He has been able to obscure this fact (to some extent) by hiding information and muzzling witnesses. If the information was made public, and the witnesses forced to testify, the Repukes in the Senate would be unable to acquit him. The pressure would be too great from the public once the truth was laid bare without all the smoke and noise coming from his sycophants.

This is why they want to get this over with as quickly as possible. It is unfortunate that the Dems had to move rapidly and expeditiously, because the calendar did not favor them being able to extract the information and witnesses through the courts.

I hope that Schumer can convince enough Repubs to demand witness testimony. The documentary evidence seems to demand explanations through testimony.

If anything this will be used to pound away at the Republicans in the Senate. This is proof of direct involvement by POTUS. It is literally the smoking gun This is a major development. Pelosi and Schiff knew exactly what they were doing when Schiff said they might be adding more articles and the investigation would continue and Nancy decided to hold back on sending the Articles to the Senate.
The New York Times was given a tip that, in August, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and then-national security adviser John Bolton met privately with Trump, urging him to release military aid to Ukraine; he reportedly refused. This was deliberately leaked to the Times for a reason, from someone on the inside.

Indeed, the just-released material bears that out.

You get guys like Vindeman, Fiona Hill, Taylor and the others, all career civil servants coming forward, and it tells us that there is a deep state and thank god there is, because those people are the ones who go to work every day and take their job seriously and protect our country. Trump is dismantling that capability at the worst possible moment. All because he wants to change the subject from impeachment to distract us.

On twitter all the pundits a re saying Trump just deliberately assassinated the Number 2 guy in the Iranian military at the airport in Iraq. Richard Engel is saying the consequences will be massive. Either Iraq or Israel will feel the brunt of payback. It will escalate tensions and Lebanon and Hezbollah will get actively involved. Engel said this is a massive escalation.

Now. Knowing Iran is a client state of Russia, and Putin doesn't want anyone fucking with Iran, either Trump got his permission to take out this guy, or Putin is going to have to clean up this mess before it gets a lot worse. At what point does Trump become a liability for Vlad?

Trump consulted with no one. He just took a hit out on the guy. The guy was a bad person, but WTF . Trump hasn't thought this through and he has no national security team dealing with this shit. We a re in a real bad place right now.

Interesting question, but I don’t think we will have an evenly divided Senate. I think it will be 51/49. John LeBoutillier, the former Republican congressman, who wrote the predictions at R285, believes that Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, and Maine will go to the Democrats and Doug Jones will lose his seat in Alabama. Agree with the pickups, but a loss by Jones may not matter because Tom Tillis could be defeated in North Carolina, where he enters reelection as not particularly popular. And, who knows, there may be a completely unexpected Senate victory or two in November.

by Anonymousreply 296January 3, 2020 11:56 AM

Putin really is calling the shots, and he doesn't want war in Iran. Putin wants us out of the Middle East as he consolidates his own power there. He has Turkey, Iran, and Syria, and probably Lebanon. Maybe Putin allowed these guys to get assassinated by Trump, so Trump places us in a position to be forced out of the Middle East. Maybe the guys Trump took out were too troublesome for Putin so he was allowing the hit because they were too aggressive in seeking war with the US. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of angles to this that need to be explored. Pay attention, because there aren't too many experts who will come on TV to discuss this with all the nuance it deserves. Maybe Maddow, but not too many others.

They've already exceeded the auto industry bailout and all without voter approval because they can funnel USDA funds through a 'private' corporation under the umbrella(control) of their corporate masters, all all of us the suckers on the hook for those billions. Taxation without representation, but who fucking cares when you can still buy a lotto and hope to be a future 1% grifter. At the very least, your kids won't have to compete for the chicken plucking jobs with 'dirty mexicans'.

That epidemic? It's already here.

Pete Buttigieg Responds After Trump Accuses Him of Being a 'Pretend' Christian: 'God Does Not Belong to a Political Party'

*

Trump told members of his evangelical base at the King Jesus International Ministry in Miami that God is "on our side" against "radical left" Democrats. He accused several prominent Democratic figures including Buttigieg and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of trying to remove God from America and replace religion with socialism, although he offered no examples of how this is happening. Trump once again mocked Buttigieg's name and questioned whether his Christian faith is genuine, prompting a succinct rebuke from the former mayor, whose term ended on January 1.

"The extreme left is trying to replace religion with government and replace God with socialism," Trump claimed Friday in Florida, prompting boos from the audience.

"And I see Alfred E. Neuman comes out and he's trying to pretend he's very religious. Alfred E. Neuman you know who that is, right?" Trump said, comparing the Democratic candidate to the fictitious Mad magazine cover character. "Buttigieg—you go 'boot' and then 'edge, edge,' because nobody can pronounce his name so they call him 'Mayor Pete.'"

"Now Mayor Pete I hope he does great. Boot-edge-edge. Now all of a sudden he's become extremely religious, this happened about two weeks ago," Trump continued.

Buttigieg responded on Twitter late Friday night with a concise message: "God does not belong to a political party."

AP: Georgia's new GOP senator enters politics amid impeachment

*

Loeffler was criticized by Trump allies as too moderate and inexperienced when her appointment was announced in December, but she has spent the past several weeks travelling Georgia and trying to win over conservatives with a “pro-Second Amendment, pro-Trump, pro-military and pro-wall” message.

Speaking to reporters last week in Savannah, she said she intends to vote “no” on removing Trump from office.

“I don’t think there was due process followed in the House proceeding, so it would be very difficult to understand how that would not be the conclusion," Loeffler said. “So yes, I would support a ‘no’ vote on impeachment.” She did not say how she believed the House failed to follow due process.

by Anonymousreply 456January 6, 2020 4:10 PM

Fox News legal analyst Andrew Napolitano on Monday advised Democrats in the House of Representatives to reopen their impeachment inquiry and consider drafting additional articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

In an interview with host Bill Hemmer, Napolitano pointed to newly released emails showing that Trump was directly ordering the hold on military aid to Ukraine as fresh evidence that he was trying to extort the country until it agreed to launch an investigation into prospective 2020 rival Joe Biden.

“If I were a Democrat in the House, I would be moving to reopen the impeachment on the basis of the newly acquired evidence, these new emails of people getting instructions directly from the president to hold up on the sending of the funds,” Napolitano said. “That would justify holding onto the articles of impeachment, because there’s new evidence and perhaps new articles.”

If they really wanted to help pressure Bolton into testifying they could all sign a statement saying they would refuse to interview him about his upcoming book unless he did it. From CNN, MSNBC, ABC,NBC, CBS, PBS, WaPo, NYT, HuffPo, Buzzfeed etc they could all do that

Bolton writing a book that trashes Trump will not go over well with the majority of who is left in the repub base. He therefore NEEDS sales from moderates, independents and even Democrats.

but of course the media would never do that because they all want that exclusive

by Anonymousreply 511January 7, 2020 9:09 AM

Whether he's President or not he has a huge target on his back for the rest of his life. And his personality is only making it worse. Because he is bragging and threatening and promoting this in a very unseemly way.

Compare this to how Obama took out Bin Laden. While a lot of things happened "off stage" so to speak, Obama comported himself with dignity and humility. Yes humility. He never plastered images of Bin Laden's dead body on the internet. He even made sure Bin Laden had a Muslim burial at sea.

Obama probably notified key leaders in various countries, especially Muslim countries, and may have even got them to quietly buy into it. Remember, one of the Obama administration's main arguments was that Bin Laden was killing Muslims. There were clerics and other leaders decrying Bin Laden as a rogue. And he was. He was a stateless homicidal maniac. We didn't see tens of millions of people demonstrating against the USA because Obama was respectful and respected.

Contrast that with Trump who is inadvertently participating in his own humiliation. Putin's role in all of this can't be overstated. His goal is to get us out of the Middle East and Afghanistan so that Putin and his oligarchs can control access to the minerals oil and gas in those regions.

Putin is also making inroads in South America as we speak. Trump is helping that happen. He is weakening us and isolating us. Even the most corrupt members of the Republican Party have to see where this road leads for us and for them personally. We've been the only nation standing in Putin's way. Our allies are only as strong as we are. Trump is dismantling us.

Steve Schmidt explains to Rolling Stone why Lindsey Graham didn't have to be blackmailed into Trump sycophancy:

“People try to analyze Lindsey through the prism of the manifest inconsistencies that exist between things that he used to believe and what he’s doing now. The way to understand him is to look at what’s consistent. And essentially what he is in American politics is what, in the aquatic world, would be a pilot fish: a smaller fish that hovers about a larger predator, like a shark, living off of its detritus. That’s Lindsey. And when he swam around the McCain shark, broadly viewed as a virtuous and good shark, Lindsey took on the patina of virtue. But wherever the apex shark is, you find the Lindsey fish hovering about, and Trump’s the newest shark in the sea. Lindsey has a real draw to power — but he’s found it unattainable on his own merits.”

Calls for Gosar to delete his tweet went ignored. The congressman instead blamed the backlash on "dim witted reporters."

"1. To the dim witted reporters like @dmedin11: no one said this wasn't photoshopped," Gosar tweeted. "No one said the president of Iran was dead. No one said Obama met with Rouhani in person. The tweet says: 'the world is a better place without either of them in power'."

"2. The point remains to all but the dimmest: Obama coddled, appeased, nurtured and protected the worlds No. 1 sponsor of terror," Gosar continued. "The world is better without Obama as president. The world will be better off without Rouhani."

Many commenters continued to express doubts the congressman knew the image was fake when he shared it.

The same doctored photo appears to have been used in a 2015 campaign ad for Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson before it was called out as fake, BuzzFeed News reported at the time.

R513 That's a good explanation. In South Carolina from the beginning of his political history and perhaps prior, Graham has consistently gravitated to an older man of influence and power, and ingratiated himself with each. He also is eager to boast about his role in others that have acquired elevated status. His display of extreme emotional connection to Judge Kavanaugh is the most blatant example. What Graham doesn't appear to grasp is the need to establish parameters for such behavior. With Graham, the authority figure he is currently attached to must be promoted and defended by all means available. Thus, anyone critical or speaks contrary to his idolized figure, is deemed the enemy is showing ill intent. It looks on surface as "daddy" needs stemming from perhaps trying to figure the psychological perspective of all this behavior. It is also his long adapted political survival technique. Apparently, It does not matter to him if his views and comments are total contradictions of what he said prior. With him, political expediency that benefits him personally takes priority over any objectivity, rules, legalities, procedures, and ethics intended to promote fairness and order.
Which is what would make his defeat in November so wonderfully fantastic. He’d be a loser. And out of power. Delightful.

I pray that it happens. He is a reprehensible, repugnant human being. He doesn't even make an attempt to hide his corruption. Vote him out and take away his power. No one deserves it more. Let him put on an apron and help Satan by dusting around the house. That's where he belongs.

by Anonymousreply 528January 7, 2020 3:39 PM

524 Who in the WH is actually running the place? Stephen Miller for one. By now, he may be enacting policies and taking other actions within a vacuum. Whose supervising him? It is an organizational mess. Kellyanne? She comes out at times to violate the Hatch, but what else she does is unclear. Maybe she spends the hours away filing her nails? Stephanie Grisham doesn't do any press conferences. She appears sometimes on Fox before a friendly anchor. That's it. Jared Kushner is doing whatever. Mulvaney is no General Kelly. If funny money is afloat, he's there for that, supposedly. The whole cabinet is a mess. What cabinet member is qualified, highly ethical, hard working, honest, not doing it for enhancing personal wealth, and shows measurable results for the public good? Heck if I can say.

Because he failed to cooperate with them fully, and he lied to them, they're demanding...are you ready for this?... 6 months! That's right, muchachos! S.I.X. MONTHS. That'll show that traitorous, extortionate bastard!

by Anonymousreply 540January 7, 2020 6:29 PM

I have had posts appear twice. That happens sometimes, particularly when using an iPhone. The initial button push may show nothing immediately, or the script is delayed for sometime later or it is never shows. I don't think R530 was deliberately trying to display multiple posts. The poster pushed the button three times for it to go through. The problem is with the constant DL loading and confusing error messages after attempts. Once I had a double post with just one push of the post button.

Chuck Schumer demanded Tuesday morning that Republicans allow witnesses to testify during President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. But Mitch McConnell already knew he had the votes to roll over his adversary.

It took just a few hours for McConnell and Senate GOP leaders to clinch a final whip count in support of moving forward with a trial framework that ignores Democratic requests. And all 53 Republicans — even moderates such as Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mitt Romney of Utah — have agreed to the majority leader’s proposal, according to senators involved in the process.

McConnell had spent months cultivating his caucus to get to this point. And after McConnell told his colleagues of his plans at the GOP’s weekly lunch, he went out and told a media horde the same.

“We have the votes,” McConnell declared, meaning Republicans can start the Trump trial with no Democratic input once Speaker Nancy Pelosi sends over the articles of impeachment.

The job of all Democrats at this point is to point out what a worthless whore Mitch McConnell and ALL Republicans are. That is far more valuable than anything else. We know they don't want an actual trial. We know they whore for Trump all the time. It is their job to point that out constantly. Nobody expects a fair trial in the Senate. Nobody expects any trial at all. Hang it around the necks of the so-called moderates. They're all useless cunts. Make it obvious.
